As a Graduate Assistant, you will gain experience of working in an educational setting, whilst engaging in a bespoke training programme designed to support your professional development and enhance your employability. Successful applicants will be likely to have future career interests or aspirations in education or working with young people in some way, and be desirous to actively seek challenging opportunities to develop their academic, pastoral and interpersonal skills as a result of this.   Living in a rent-free, ensuite studio flat within a Boarding Home on the School campus, you will support the boarding staff outside of day school hours in the pastoral care of a group of boarders. During the School day itself, you will also work with the academic team in your assigned department. We have a wide range of opportunities for Graduate Assistants, including Sport, Art, Music, Drama and Dance as well as in supporting EAL provision, Mathematics and in many other academic departments.   The Graduate Programme has been incredibly successful at providing a professional pathway for those interested in becoming a teacher and for anyone interested in a potential career in Boarding. Although there are no guarantees, several Graduate Assistants have successfully applied for full time teaching positions afterwards and are now flourishing within our teaching faculty. We typically seek to welcome 21 Graduate Assistants every year at NLCS Jeju and look forward to receiving your application.   Job Description   Much of your time will be spent working in a specific department, enabling you to immerse yourself in your specialist area and, most importantly, work with students in an academic, creative arts and/or sporting setting. However, there will also be a significant part of your working time dedicated to working within the Boarding Homes and contributing to the ‘Beyond the Curriculum’ side of the School. You will have free time every weekday morning and some evenings, but will work in the afternoons and at weekends. You also have one full day off per week.   It is important to note that all on-site boarding staff, including Graduate Assistants, need to be flexible when it comes to working hours. A willingness to help out, get stuck in and show initiative are essential qualities.   Specific responsibilities will vary depending on each individualʼs skills and interests, but will include:   - Departmental Time   You will be assigned to an academic department depending on your area of specialism. Departments coordinate this, looking at how best to utilise your skill set and ensure that the experience is rewarding. Tasks could range from administrative work to acting as an Assistant Teacher in lessons, or coaching and organising sports or arts events. There may also be opportunities to support the work of non-academic areas such as Marketing, University Guidance, Information Technology and the Individual Needs Department.   - Boarding Duties and Prep Time   Your duties in the Boarding Home will focus on help with prep time on 3 evenings a week, and also assisting with the pastoral development of the boarding students. Prep happens every evening in the Boarding Homes and, during this time, your role is to help ensure that the students are doing their homework quietly and sensibly, though you should be prepared for some to ask for help with their work; you will need to be willing to guide them where possible!   Prep time is also a good opportunity to give one-to-one support to students who may be struggling. There will always be a member of the boarding staff on duty at this time who has overall responsibility, so you can refer any concerns you may have to him or her if necessary.   - House Competitions and Trips   The Senior School House Competition runs on Friday afternoons from 3pm to 4pm. Events include basketball, singing, cross-country, and drama to name but a few. Your role will be to help organise the students involved, take part in the running of events, motivate those participating and generally boost House spirit. Great ideas for additions to the programme are always welcome! There may also be times where you help with organising and running school trips.   - Beyond the Curriculum   Students attend after-school Co-Curricular Activities (‘CCAs’) from 3.20pm to 4.15pm in the Junior School (Monday-Thursday) and from 4.15pm to 5.15pm in the Senior School (Tuesday-Thursday). There is a huge range of different activities on and, as a Graduate Assistant, you will be asked to help with up to 3 Junior and up to 3 Senior School activities each week. For the most part, you will run CCAs based upon your own interests and expertise, but occasionally may be asked to help with others if more staff are needed.   Our Beyond the Curriculum provision also extends into Saturday mornings during term time by way of the ‘Bryant’ Programme. Bryant activities run on 18 Saturdays a year from 9am to 12pm and the myriad of options offered include scuba diving, hiking, swimming, community service or drama productions. Again, you will assist specific programmes or activities based upon your expertise.   - Training and Whole-School Events   In addition to the responsibilities above, you will be expected to engage fully with professional training and development opportunities provided throughout the year for all School staff. This will include training from the EAL Department, so that you are in a better position to help students who may struggle with some aspects of the English language, as well as learning more about the Korean language and culture itself from the Korean department.
