The successful applicant will have experience in teaching throughout Key Stages 3, 4 & 5 Physics and will be an effective leader of curriculum and pedagogy within the department. Experience in delivering IBDP Physics and IGCSE Physics (Cambridge) is an advantage. The right candidate will demonstrate a passion for their subject but also for wider scholarship, both within and beyond the taught curriculum. The ability to provide challenging, engaging and supportive lessons for all learners is essential, and to enhance the progress of students across the department.    NLCS (UK) North London Collegiate School (UK) was founded in 1850 by Frances Mary Buss; her aim was to offer an academically ambitious education to girls, similar to that available to their brothers. The School has pioneered women’s education for over 160 years and remains among the highest achieving schools in the UK. Exam results regularly top the UK league tables and the School has repeatedly outperformed other prestigious schools in terms of Oxbridge success rates.   Unlike many UK independent schools, NLCS has a firm commitment to ensuring close links with its overseas branch schools. Every effort is made to replicate the ethos and standards of NLCS overseas. Wherever possible, staff for overseas schools are interviewed in London and by NLCS (UK) staff, as well as staff from our overseas schools. All teachers, once appointed, are invited to travel to London for induction and training at the UK school and this is generously funded by our partners.   Once an overseas branch is open, it is regularly monitored and inspected by the UK school, and close links are formed through pupil and staff exchanges, joint departmental projects, educational visits and extracurricular activities, such as videoconference debates and jointly produced student publications.   As the NLCS family of schools expands (with a further overseas school opened in Singapore in 2020), it is hoped that partnership activities will expand so that each school in the group develops links with the others. We also hope to see staff join the group in order to build their career with us and benefit from the many professional development and career-progression opportunities, which a group of world-class schools such as ours can offer.   NTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS   In 2011, NLCS opened its first international branch school in South Korea: NLCS Jeju. NLCS Jeju is a co-educational day and boarding school, and offers the IB Diploma to all students in the Sixth Form, and has achieved outstanding results since its first cohort of graduating in 2014. The School’s alumnae continue on to excellent universities around the world, including destinations in the UK, USA and Asia.      In September 2017, NLCS opened its second branch school in the UAE: NLCS Dubai. The School is a co-educational, day school, following the IB Continuum, with pupils undertaking the IB Diploma in Grade 12.      NLCS (Singapore) opened in August 2020. This is NLCS’ third branch school. The School is a co-education day school in the heart of Singapore. North London Collegiate School Ho Chi Minh City opened in August 2022.  This is NLCS’s fourth school blending the best of Vietnamese, NLCS and international education for its students.     NLCS JEJU     North London Collegiate School Jeju (NLCS Jeju) is a leading British International school providing an exceptional education experience for 1500 day and boarding students aged 4-18.  The first international school to be opened in the vibrant Global Education City on the spectacular South Korean Island of Jeju, NLCS Jeju has rapidly established itself as a centre of educational excellence in South East Asia.  The School, now entering its eleventh year of operation, has nearly 1500 students on the roll.  NLCS Jeju offers the IB Diploma to all in the Sixth Form and has achieved outstanding results since its first cohort of graduating students in 2014. Over the last 4 years our average points score has been over 38 points and we have students achieving the perfect score as well as significant numbers of students achieving 40+points .     THE ETHOS  The ethos of NLCS Jeju echoes that of NLCS (UK) – every effort is made to recreate the ethos of the UK ‘parent’ school, whilst taking into account and remaining sensitive to the local culture and context.      The School aims to provide a first-rate ambitious academic education for every child, which inspires a life-long love of learning and gives the knowledge, attitudes and confidence to flourish.      At North London Collegiate schools, academic success is gained, not through an emphasis on results, by creating an atmosphere of rigorous scholarship; students are encouraged to study beyond the examination syllabus in order to develop their intellectual independence and love of their subjects. The pastoral well-being is of the utmost importance and good relationships are fostered between students and staff, as well as between the students themselves.      The co-curricular life of NLCS schools is vibrant, both in academic and non-academic fields. Students participate in a wide range of subject-focussed clubs and societies, from weekly book groups to Debating, to ‘Mad Scientists’ and ‘Model United Nations’. In the UK School, over forty academic clubs and societies operate weekly meetings and events, in order to give every opportunity for students to develop their intellectual curiosity, independence of thought and genuine love of subject; there are a large number of student-produced academic journals which reflect the particular interests of these societies. Non-academic activities also thrive as NLCS schools aims to create an environment in which the whole personality can grow. The School provides the same impressive range of extra-curricular activities for which the NLCS schools are well known, and to foster well-rounded individuals who are capable of becoming leaders.    NLCS HCMC aims to be the top-performing IB World School in country, supporting the aspirations and abilities of all students; as a result, they and their families will choose to stay with NLCS throughout their Primary and Secondary schooling.     NLCS HCMC will be adual language immersionschool, and aims to seek authorisation as an IB continuum school for the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma programmes. The school will also be approved by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) as teaching the Vietnamese National Curriculum. The pastoral well-being is of the utmost importance and good relationships are fostered between students and staff, as well as between the students themselves.     The extra-curricular life of NLCS schools is vibrant, both in academic and non-academic fields. Extra-curricular Sport, Music, Art and Drama are all of excellent quality and over seventy activities take place at lunch times and after school each day, with large numbers of students involved.     THE CURRICULUM  The curriculum reflects the academic ambition and aspirations of NLCS (UK). As mentioned above, an extensive extra-curricular programme of Sport, Music, Drama and other activities, which closely reflects that at NLCS (UK), are provided to enrich and broaden the education offered, developing the talents and confidence of students.    NLCS HCMC aspires to be a MOET-approved, bilingual “IB Continuum School’’ offering the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) in the Junior School in Grades 1-5,Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grades 6 to 9, Pre-IBDP in Grade 10 and Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form (Grades 11-12).    LIFE IN VIETNAM  Life in Vietnam is a blend of many different influences. Expats moving to Vietnam will experience a culture thought to be the oldest in East Asia. Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam with a population of more than 9 million. NLCS JEJU GRADUATE PROGRAMME 2024-2025   Introduction to NLCS Jeju   North London Collegiate School Jeju is a large, thriving co-educational Day and Boarding School for students aged 4-18. Our curriculum and ambitious academic ethos, together with outstanding pastoral care and an extensive co-curricular programme, reflect our close links with NLCS UK and ensure that we provide a high-quality British Independent School education in an international setting.   The spirit of NLCS Jeju is one of high energy and achievement. Our students combine academic excellence and a deep love of learning with a wealth of co-curricular opportunities to develop into exceptional individuals who believe that anything is possible. Results throughout the School are formidable and last yearʼs graduating students achieved an average IBDP score of 36 points, with over a quarter of the cohort earning a score of 40 or more. Our alumni attend some of the worldʼs leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, UCal Berkeley, Imperial London and Columbia.   The School is set in one of Asiaʼs most beautiful and spectacular locations. Jeju Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site 130 km off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula and is often described as one of Asiaʼs best kept secrets. With its temperate climate, stunning natural scenery, array of rare and endangered wildlife and picturesque beaches, it is a unique, fascinating and breathtaking culture and environment in which to live.   The nature of the Graduate Programme   NLCS Jeju is looking for adventurous, energetic, ambitious graduates to join our team of committed and innovative staff. As a Graduate Assistant, you will gain experience of working in an educational setting, whilst engaging in a bespoke training programme designed to support your professional development and enhance your employability. Successful applicants will be likely to have future career interests or aspirations in education or working with young people in some way, and be desirous to actively seek challenging opportunities to develop their academic, pastoral and interpersonal skills as a result of this.   Living in a rent-free, ensuite studio flat within a Boarding Home on the School campus, you will support the boarding staff outside of day school hours in the pastoral care of a group of boarders. During the School day itself, you will also work with the academic team in your assigned department. We have a wide range of opportunities for Graduate Assistants, including Sport, Art, Music, Drama and Dance as well as in supporting EAL provision, Mathematics and in many other academic departments.   The Graduate Programme has been incredibly successful at providing a professional pathway for those interested in becoming a teacher and for anyone interested in a potential career in Boarding. Although there are no guarantees, several Graduate Assistants have successfully applied for full time teaching positions afterwards and are now flourishing within our teaching faculty. This is also an effective pathway for gaining residential experience and some former Graduate Assistants are currently Assistant Boarding Masters/Mistresses working towards their goal of leading their own Boarding Home.   The Graduate Programme runs for the duration of the academic year so, to take part, you must be available from the beginning of August 2024 until the end of June 2025. We typically seek to welcome 21 Graduate Assistants every year at NLCS Jeju and look forward to receiving your application.   Job Description   Much of your time will be spent working in a specific department, enabling you to immerse yourself in your specialist area and, most importantly, work with students in an academic, creative arts and/or sporting setting. However, there will also be a significant part of your working time dedicated to working within the Boarding Homes and contributing to the ‘Beyond the Curriculum’ side of the School. You will have free time every weekday morning and some evenings, but will work in the afternoons and at weekends. You also have one full day off per week.   It is important to note that all on-site boarding staff, including Graduate Assistants, need to be flexible when it comes to working hours. A willingness to help out, get stuck in and show initiative are essential qualities.   Specific responsibilities will vary depending on each individualʼs skills and interests, but will include:   - Departmental Time   You will be assigned to an academic department depending on your area of specialism. Departments coordinate this, looking at how best to utilise your skill set and ensure that the experience is rewarding. Tasks could range from administrative work to acting as an Assistant Teacher in lessons, or coaching and organising sports or arts events. There may also be opportunities to support the work of non-academic areas such as Marketing, University Guidance, Information Technology and the Individual Needs Department.   - Boarding Duties and Prep Time   Your duties in the Boarding Home will focus on help with prep time on 3 evenings a week, and also assisting with the pastoral development of the boarding students. Prep happens every evening in the Boarding Homes and, during this time, your role is to help ensure that the students are doing their homework quietly and sensibly, though you should be prepared for some to ask for help with their work; you will need to be willing to guide them where possible!   Prep time is also a good opportunity to give one-to-one support to students who may be struggling. There will always be a member of the boarding staff on duty at this time who has overall responsibility, so you can refer any concerns you may have to him or her if necessary.   - House Competitions and Trips   The Senior School House Competition runs on Friday afternoons from 3pm to 4pm. Events include basketball, singing, cross-country, and drama to name but a few. Your role will be to help organise the students involved, take part in the running of events, motivate those participating and generally boost House spirit. Great ideas for additions to the programme are always welcome! There may also be times where you help with organising and running school trips.   - Beyond the Curriculum   Students attend after-school Co-Curricular Activities (‘CCAs’) from 3.20pm to 4.15pm in the Junior School (Monday-Thursday) and from 4.15pm to 5.15pm in the Senior School (Tuesday-Thursday). There is a huge range of different activities on and, as a Graduate Assistant, you will be asked to help with up to 3 Junior and up to 3 Senior School activities each week. For the most part, you will run CCAs based upon your own interests and expertise, but occasionally may be asked to help with others if more staff are needed.   Our Beyond the Curriculum provision also extends into Saturday mornings during term time by way of the ‘Bryant’ Programme. Bryant activities run on 18 Saturdays a year from 9am to 12pm and the myriad of options offered include scuba diving, hiking, swimming, community service or drama productions. Again, you will assist specific programmes or activities based upon your expertise.   - Training and Whole-School Events   In addition to the responsibilities above, you will be expected to engage fully with professional training and development opportunities provided throughout the year for all School staff. This will include training from the EAL Department, so that you are in a better position to help students who may struggle with some aspects of the English language, as well as learning more about the Korean language and culture itself from the Korean department. There will also be occasions when you will be required to help out with whole school activities and/or supervision.   Example Schedule   Although individual timetables will be tailored to each Graduate Assistant depending on the needs of the department to which you are assigned, an example can be seen below.   Weekdays 7.30am Breakfast (optional) 10am onwards Department Time (approx 15 hours per week to be arranged on arrival) 12.40pm-1.30pm Lunch 3.15pm-4.15pm Senior School Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) 5.30pm-7pm Dinner and Boarding Breakout Time (supervisory role if on duty) 7pm-10.30pm Boarding Duties (if on duty)   Saturdays 8.15am Breakfast (optional) 9am-12pm Bryant Activity (specific Saturdays during term time only) 12.30pm-1pm Lunch Specified times between 1pm and 11pm Supervising activities for boarding students (total of 10 hours over a weekend)   Person Specification   To be eligible for the Graduate Programme you must have completed a university degree prior to the start date (August 2024). In addition, we are looking for individuals who:   - Display a high level of maturity, independence and enthusiasm. - Have strong communication and interpersonal skills. - Can act as a positive role model to students. - Are proactive and will use their initiative to find ways to add value to the School. - Take responsibility for their own personal development. - Show a willingness to work hard and be flexible.   Package and Benefits   The Graduate Programme offers a competitive package of benefits, including:   - Monthly salary of 2,060,740 KRW - Free accommodation. - Private health insurance. - Three free meals per day during term time. - Flights to Jeju at the beginning of the programme and back to your country of residence at the end of the programme. - Use of the School facilities (including music studios, art studios, swimming pool and other sports facilities) when they are not being used by students. - Training and development opportunities that are usually only available to teaching staff.   Application Procedure   We do not accept applications via email or letter so all formal applications must be submitted through the NLCS International ICIMS portal.   If you have any questions or would like to discuss the programme before submitting an application, you can contact Henry Wiggins, Vice Principal, directly on hwiggins@nlcsjeju.kr for an informal discussion.   The deadline for applications to start in August 2024 is 25/04/2024.   Please be aware that we are a safer recruitment school and as such the School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
